The basic idea in the psychodynamic perspective is that we, through a defense mechanism, keep away thoughts that are difficult, embarrassing, or traumatic. Conflicts or experiences that are not processed lead to mental symptoms.
The reason for mental illness through this perspective is that for example, someone has grown up in a lot of quarrels and conflicts, the person’s parents have separated, mother has tried to commit suicide which is a traumatic experience for a child to experience and the individual’s parents still quarrel every time they are seen. The person has gone through something traumatic.
Treatments could have been Free Associations where you let the person talk freely about how he thinks and then proceed to let him process everything that makes the person feel the way they do.
Hypnosis is another treatment where you hypnotize the individual and have him in an almost sleeping state and unlock his subconscious so he can process everything that gives him poor mental health in his subconscious. The purpose of the therapy had been to create balance in the person’s psyche and help him process what makes him feel bad.
The basic idea in the behavioral perspective is that everything is objective, concrete, and practical. It is always the environment that affects the behavior and all people are born without special characteristics and all behavior is learned.
Everything that the person has been through. For example, traumatic experience, parental divorce, and a lot of trouble as a child could lead to you not spending much time with friends, starting to eat less. That is just to name a few examples.
Treatments offered for mental health issues viewed from this perspective could be Exposure Therapy where expose yourself to for example anxiety and gradually get rid of it.
Negative mental health from a cognitive perspective is where one thinks very negatively and surrounds themselves with negative thoughts, which then leads to them, for example, not wanting to meet friends or eat so much, which continues the negative feeling which then leads back to negative thoughts where it continues in a loop.
Forms of therapy that one could have tried would have been to write a diary every day about how he feels and then reflect on it or perhaps Cognitive behavioral therapy abbreviated CBT. CBT is a form of therapy where the main purpose is to help the patient change their thoughts and behavior so that they no longer feels bad.
Medical – Biological Perspective
According to the medical-biological perspective, one should look at mental illness in the same way as one looks at physical illnesses and find out what the cause of a mental illness is, which can be an imbalance in the serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine transmitter substances.
Some diseases that cause mental illness can be depression and schizophrenia which can be hereditary. Help against mental illness according to this perspective could have been, for example, Benzodiazepines which is a highly addictive sedative drug, which is why it’s only prescribed with high caution.
Another help that could be offered is SSRI medication which tries to create balance in the serotonin transmitter substance, SNRI which does the same thing as SSRI but also in the Noradrenaline transmitter substance.
